“Amphitrite Sings” Porthbeor Beach, Cornwall represents the connection between the solitude of this wild beach and the power of the ocean. Looking down from the footpath as we walked towards St Anthony’s Lighthouse and St Mawes in the Roseland Peninsula, I felt a sense of freedom as the rough sea rolled and crashed on the bare shore. This beach felt connected to the sea, like old friends, free from human and pet footprints, seagulls laughing and gloating because they could access this beach to play. As the ocean absorbed my attention, her sense of power, fun, ownership, freedom, beauty, strength, ability to change and her unpredictability filled me with respect. Amphitrite, the goddess of the sea, was confined in her authority to the sea and the creatures within in. In this painting I feel you can imagine her playing and orchestrating the sea and it’s creatures and as she does so, you may be able to hear her sing.
