C H A N T E L L E

For me, painting landscapes is a creative way to express emotion, capture the spiritual aspect of nature I feel within and explore self.

I’ve always had a strong connection to nature, be it with the ever changing ocean or exploring the mountains where I grew up – curious about the shapes, angles and colours Mother Nature has to share with us.

I capture the beauty I encounter on my excursions, absorb the energy from mountains, gasp at the colours, the wildness and the power of the natural world I stand within at that moment. These are the times when I feel all my senses are at their peak.

I paint not only what I see in those moments, but I’m inspired by what and how I feel within. I become the mountains, the sky, the clouds, the movement in the water and the grass. All these elements are so different, but connected to form a landscape of which we are part.

My process is physical and intuitive. I use palette knives to create raw, natural textures and paint the clouds with my fingers to capture their sense of freedom. The intricate dot work in my pieces represents our deep, interconnected relationship with the earth—reminding us that we aren't just observers of the landscape, but a part of it.

“Winter Kaleidoscope”, Grasmere looking to Windermere represents the ever changing array of colours experienced from this viewpoint in The Lake District. Two days prior to the day I stood here, the landscape was blanketed in the stark beauty of snow which had settled on Christmas Day. Standing here at this viewpoint, one may ponder how proud Mother Nature is of her true colours, the re-emergence of her beauty and complexity after being hidden by the monochrome effect of the snow, perhaps her sense of relief too. One may also reflect on how this connects to self and our awareness of our very own kaleidoscope of colours.

“Roll n’ Rock” is a vibrant representation of the rolling landscape in the Lake District and the many meandering dry stone walls which depict the interaction between family, history and ownership with the landscape. I find the rocks of the dry stone walls so tactile, and I imagine the many stories these walls could share if they could speak. They are completely part of the landscape, running like veins through the land. Together, the rolling landscape and rocky walls hold stories of time and the slow evolution of our this wild natural world.

“Ambleside – Great Langdale” is one of those spectacular views which stops you unexpectedly in your tracks if you happen to look back during your journey towards Blea Tarn. It’s a vast, dramatic scene and one feels encompassed by the grandeur of the majestic mountains surrounding you, nurturing you and bringing the realisation that you are only a mere speck within the bones and history of Mother Nature within The Lake District.

“Boundaries of Freedom” represents the landscape within the fenced borders of the Lake District. Not only is it an expression of the land, but also of the spiritual sensation the soul experiences when feeling home, here in nature. There is a sensation of peace and love expressed through the vibrant colours and meandering dot detail. Freedom has boundaries, and
standing here before the fence shares a feeling of excitement, desire and longing to step over and be within the boundaries of freedom.

“LIFE CURRENT” represents Zennor Head in Cornwall. The ocean currents, like arteries of our Earth, swirl and dance to the rhythm of Mother Nature’s heartbeat. I thought about how these currents connect distant shores and ecosystems, linking our world’s inhabitants in a harmonious symphony of life. The jagged coastline murmurs tales of giants, enchanting mermaids and mystical witches who once roamed this captivating realm. The coastal shrubs appear ancient, course, immortal, exuding their resilient beauty as they repeatedly brave the wild forces of nature and forge a path of regrowth in the aftermath of a recent fire.

“Turn of the Tide” represents Towan Beach, Gerrans Bay in Cornwall. When standing at this viewpoint along the coastal path, I reminisce looking back to the beach and what really drew me in was how far out the tide had gone, leaving behind a beautiful arrangement of rocks with neon green algae and seaweed. The previous day, when the tide was in, I was sitting on the beach with my family, eating sandwiches and laughing at couple of curious seals bobbing their heads up and down, lulling in the waves and coming up close to enquire into what us humans were up to. Either side of the tide held different experiences, I love that, the same beautiful place can be so many things, ever-changing, all part of nature
and what we share within it.

“Amphitrite Sings” Porthbeor Beach, Cornwall represents the connection between the solitude of this wild beach and the power of the ocean. Looking down from the footpath as we walked towards St Anthony’s Lighthouse and St Mawes in the Roseland Peninsula, I felt a sense of freedom as the rough sea rolled and crashed on the bare shore. This beach felt connected to the sea, like old friends, free from human and pet footprints, seagulls laughing and gloating because they could access this beach to play. As the ocean absorbed my attention, her sense of power, fun, ownership, freedom, beauty, strength, ability to change and her unpredictability filled me with respect. Amphitrite, the goddess of the sea, was confined in her authority to the sea and the creatures within in. In this painting I feel you can imagine her playing and orchestrating the sea and it’s creatures... and as she does so, you may be able to hear her sing.

“Pounding Heart, Quiet Mind” represents the physical and spiritual state of being experienced when standing at that point on Pavey Ark, whilst looking down at Stickle Tarn in The Lake District. It tells a story of a journey within ones self and also physically within nature. Climbing to this point is a challenge (pounding heart), but once you reach the top, the quiet all around and within you (quiet mind) is profound and brings a sense of awareness to yourself, life and Mother Nature. Life can be challenging at times, but when we stop and listen to the silence, things which are truly important may call out to us.

“Rooted in Reflection” is a tribute to the beauty of the trees around Blea Tarn in The Lake District. There is a profound spiritual sense of time and strength of survival here – one which I felt whilst being in, connecting with and painting this location. The tree roots stretch down to the tarn, familiar, like best friends, they’re blanketed in moss – warm and nurtured. Walking around the tarn, within the woodland, one can sense the aliveness of the trees and all that live with them. There is also a sense of deep peace and love within this beautiful place.
I have painted this using acrylic paint with a pallet knife, which I favour for the way it applies paint to canvas. This creates textures and a raw imperfection which feels natural and real in connecting with nature. It helps explore beauty in imperfection and the wildness of nature. I also use a fine paintbrush to create the dot detail in the painting. I have drawn inspiration from Aboriginal art. I love how the Aboriginal people represent their spiritual connection to the natural landscape, survival and tell stories in
their paintings.

“DIEFIED” – this palindrome, meaning “to make a god”, felt a fitting title for this painting of the Langdale Pikes and it’s reflection in the calm waters of Blea Tarn, Lake District. The majestic mountains standing tall, reaching for the heavens with its rugged peaks and serene valley embodies strength, resilience, and a timeless grace that captivates the soul. The Langdale Pikes reflect their magnificence in Blea Tarn, like inner beauty shimmering in tranquil waters of the human spirit, casting a mirror image of peace, harmony, and profound wisdom. The interplay of the mountain and its reflection in the water symbolises the interconnectedness of the physical and spiritual realms, reminding us that true beauty transcends the tangible and resonates deep within us, stirring the essence of our being with a sense of wonder and reverence.

Alectrona, the goddess of the Sun. She rises beyond Loughrigg Fell in The Lake District, illuminating the surrounding natural beauty from high above the clouds, light crackling through the darkness between us, mirrors reflect time, beauty and strength in pools of dreams below. A stunning walk from Elterwater which we as a family regularly walk when in The Lakes. Every time, I stop at this point and allow the vastness of my surroundings to take me in. Quiet, still, wild, vibrating and dense under foot. Feeling so connected to our Earth and all that makes it real.

“Trip to Blea Tarn” represents the deep spiritual sense of peace and freedom felt at this viewpoint in
The Lake District. It is so quiet here, but one feels drawn to the dense spiritual being of the lake, the mountains and the trees, connecting all that is around us and within us together, forming a deep bond with Mother Nature. The autumnal colours provoke curiosity and awe, and one may feel their soul smile from within as we connect to the beauty and stillness experienced in this moment.

“Ambleside – towards Little Langdale” is an expression of autumnal beauty and diversity of colour within
The Lake District. Whilst standing at this viewpoint, one may feel a surge of energy which awakens our senses. Skin prickled by the crisp autumn air, the clean damp smell from the trees and ground, the sound of dripping water and bursting streams, the vivid colours surrounding us, exploding in eye and mind. One feels nurtured and cradled in the arms of Mother Nature, a sense of feeling in tune with nature and that which makes us human and connected to Earth.
